The mission of NSBE Jr. of Southern California is to stimulate the interest of Black students in 4th to 8th grades in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields and to encourage them to attend college and pursue technical degrees. While this mission may seem obvious and redundant, the reality is stark.
According to the American Society for Engineering Education, African Americans earned 4 percent of all engineering baccalaureate degrees in 2015. This is up from the 3.5 percent in 2014, but we have a long way to go.
